Personal project wip 1

For the rest of the illustration 4 semester we are doing personal projects for four weeks. I chose Native American folklore, feeling that it is unpopular enough to not be completely tacky. The three stories I chose were all authentic tales told by the Cherokees in the 18 hundreds, and were recorded by settlers.
The first tale I chose tells of a giant bear who is eating all of the villages food. Four brothers take it upon themselves to kill the bear. After chasing the bear for a very long time they manage to slay the beast and eat it, only to find they had ran so far they were in the night sky. Nowadays the bear is the big dipper. When it is upright the bear is running from the hunters, and when it is upside down he bear has died

This image above is a color study I did for the final painting. I still have to change the size of the hunters and dog, they are a little big for chasing a giant bear

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

The most recent assignment in illustration 4; re-designing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I chose to draw the glass cat. The cat is made of glass, has a ruby heart and pink brains. It's eyes are made of gemstones as well. The cat doesn't show up in either of the movies, only in the books and this one comic I read as a kid

http://www.amazon.com/Emerald-City-Oz-Books-Wonder/dp/0688115586/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1

(That book has all the comics in one; got it on a great deal used! The art is beautiful, if your a fan of Oz pick it up :3)

The joke with this image is the one on the pillow is the best one because it has emerald eyes, where ever other cat has topaz eyes.

I had a lot of fun with my piece, it has been a long time I've painted straight with acrylics by themselves in about a year. Was very happy with the outcome! :)
